| Locum General Practitioner – various practices around Glasgow | September 2006 – August 2007 |
Relocating for personal reasons I have continued to work as a locum, gaining further experience in a wide range of practices in Greater Glasgow, Clyde, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Argyle. | Locum General Practitioner – various practices in Grampian | September 2005 – September 2006 |
Working in variety of rural and urban practices in the Grampian area I gained experience in using GPASS, Vision and EMIS PCS clinical systems in a paper light manner. From December 2005 I had a regular 2 days a week commitment in Insch Medical Practice, a rural practice with associated community hospital, completing surgeries, visits and prescription administrative work. I also completed a half day working as a duty doctor with my training practice and had frequent full day commitments with an inner-city practice in a multi-practice premises. I gained experience of the challenges of working in both rural and city centre environments, each practice had its own challenges, rurality/distance from hospital services or a mix of immigrant populations with language problems as well as the expected inner city deprivation and drugs problems.
| General Practice Registrar – Peterculter Medical Practice | August 2004 – August 2005 |
Peterculter gained Practice Accreditation in 2004 and holds Investors in People status. The practice is a high achiever in the QOF and has nurse-led chronic disease management clinics. It is a suburban/semi-rural 4 partner practice with a list of ~7300 patients in a paper light environment using the EMIS LV computer system. I gained a wide range of experience including: chronic disease management, providing medical input to local nursing homes, child health surveillance & antenatal care and experience in palliative care from a partner who works with Macmillan Cancer Relief. I completed Summative Assessment and MRCGP and developed proficiency in Minor Surgical Procedures including: cryotherapy of minor skin lesions, suturing of lacerations and other wounds, ingrowing toenail surgery, excision of sebaceous cysts and lipomas and electrocautery of skin tags. My audit project won the regional Musculoskeletal Medicine prize from the Arthritis Research Campaign and involved developing a system for monitoring DMARDs within the practice. I was exposed to out-of-hours care through the GDOCS co-operative and subsequently GMEDS, completing sessions in both Aberdeen city and the rural centre in Aboyne.

I enjoy Scottish country dancing and am a member of Aurora Scottish Music & Dance group, as well has having involvement with Dunedin Scottish dance group; I frequently attend Scottish dances around Scotland. I enjoy reading fantasy, science fiction and crime novels. My other interests include computing (I help support web pages for various dance organisations) and, on the rare occasions that I find time to squeeze it in, hill walking.
My career aim is to develop a portfolio career allowing me to combine clinical work with an interest in medical informatics and medical politics, ultimately with GP Partnership as my goal. I am currently studying part-time towards an MSc in Healthcare Informatics with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the University of Bath. I believe that completing this course will equip me with skills which will be of use in the general practice setting; such as knowledge of organising clinical systems, an understanding of governance and organisational change as well as an understanding of patient informatics and computer interaction. I am keen to use and further develop my clinical skills in Minor Surgery and Family Planning/Sub Dermal Implants.
