In setting my fees I seek to establish an income which reflects my experience and skills in General Practice. Whilst there are controls on my workload set down in my terms and conditions I accept that occasionally emergencies do occur and when they do the problem has to be delt with; I do not normally charge for small over runs. Any practice has, as part of any contract, to arrange adequate cover for patients and commitments.
In calculating fees the following are taken into account:
- Annual Registration with the General Medical Council
- Membership of the Medical Defence Union
- Membership of the British Medical Association
- Membership of the Royal College of GPs
In addition the fees reflect the cost of sickness insurance, medical equipment used by the locum and motoring expenses. National Insurance is paid by me as a self employed worker. Employers' Pension contributions are paid by my host Health Board. The costs of holiday and sick pay are included in the fees as is a contribution towards the cost of postgraduate education for the locum including appraisal and revalidation.
All fees are quoted gross of all above expenses. It will always be a case of what you are quoted is what you get. Thus your practice can budget effectively.
Neither the NASGP or the BMA are currently allowed to publish recommended rates for the employment of locums in general practice, however my rates are based on the guidelines set by both organisations.
As a guide the following rates apply to bookings from April 2008. Please remember rates shown represent my usual rates and I will adjust these depending on the work involved to give you an individual rate for the work you require. Please note that these rates apply to work for practices in areas I am available for work in. Effectively this is for practices in the following NHS board areas (where I am registered on the performers list) :
- Grampian, Greater Glasgow,
- Lanarkshire,
- Forth Valley,
- Mainland Ayshire & Arran,
- Argyle part of NHS Highland
If you are wanting to book me for areas other than Grampian, there must be a reasonable number of consecutive days to make the travel etc. worthwhile.
